Alvin L. Gravesmuehl

As a boy Alvin Gravesmuehl lived in the Music Hall of East Exchange Street, where the Akron Beacon Journal is now located. His father was the caretaker and Alvin was exposed to the many cultural events which took place there. He developed a love of music and has long been active in Akron and Cleveland choruses, glee clubs and church choirs.

From 1921 to 1940, Alvin worked for the Acme Stores and wrote and delivered radio talks at WADC for them. Initially the talks were broadcast from Dave Towell’s Auto showroom on West Market Street . They originated in the studios in Tallmadge after that. Eventually, a microphone was installed in the main offices of Acme for his daily talks. Alvin has been a lifetime member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he often assists the pastor by conducting services in German. Once he delivered a German radio broadcast on WADC at Christmas. (He included a recipe for Springerle Cookies.)
