John Gladstone “Jack Graney" *

If you’re going to talk about the history of the Cleveland Indians – you’re going to talk about Jack Graney. John “Jack” Gladstone Graney was THE voice of the Cleveland Indians from 1932 to 1953. For most of these years, he and his partner (originally Pinky Hunter and later Jimmy Dudley) would sit in a Cleveland Studio and recreate the game by reading the ticker tape and dramatizing what they read!
His love affair with the Indians began long before that. “Glad” Graney was the finest baseball player in the history of St. Thomas , Ontario and he played with the Cleveland Indians from 1908 until 1922. He was the first former athlete to become a sports announcer. The Northeast Ohio Chapter of the Society for American Baseball Research is named in Graney’s honor. Jack Graney died in 1978.
