"Greene" Greenberger *
As
a student at
Akron
’s West High, Morty Greenberger was staff cartoonist for the school paper,
“The Lariat”, and wrote, directed and acted in the school musical.
This was in the early 30’s when he also
appeared on a popular WADC show as “The Genial Engineer of the Sunshine
Special.” His announcer was the late Bob Wilson. After having written,
produced and directed college musicals while he was majoring in Business
Law, Mort decided that his true profession was to be show business.
In
Hollywood
, Mort Greene made his name known as a songwriter and lyricist as he
collaborated with the likes of Walter Donaldson, Harry Revel, Harry Barris,
Leigh Harline, Allie Wrubel and many others. He wrote lyrics for many motion
pictures, television themes and popular songs. He was nominated for an
Academy Award and three Emmys.
Mort wrote the “Silent Spot” for Red
Skelton for nine years and wrote four Red Skelton TV specials. His hobby was
miniature trains and he had quite a career “Track” record, too. He died
on December 28 of 1992 in
Palm Desert
,
California
.
